Dr. Neil Padgett – A Paca Fun Farm Alpacas
Trained as a research scientist and physician, Dr. Neil Padgett’s life took a left turn when he and his family decided to move from the suburbs and start raising alpacas.
Over the next few years, between setting fence posts and mowing pastures, it became clear to Neil that breeding alpacas was essentially an exercise in probabilities, and somewhat to his surprise his academic training gave him insight into animal husbandry and breeding practices.
Given Neil’s training in Field Biology, Medicine, and Biostatistics his interest grew from simply raising alpacas, to understanding how to consistently produce elite colored fleece, especially in gray and black.
Much research of animal breeding theory and color coat genetics ensued, leading to the development of a breeding strategy that has evolved at A Paca Fun Farm over the past 15 years. Now producing the 5th generation of the program, Neil continues to fine-tune the farm’s breeding philosophy that has already produced impressive results.
